1. Data We Collect

When you record a session, PenIt AI captures your voice and converts it to text using Apple's on-device Speech Recognition (SFSpeechRecognizer). We do not store raw audio on our servers. Transcripts are sent to our secure backend for AI analysis. Basic anonymous usage data (recording count) is stored locally on your device.

2. Third-Party Services

  • Google Gemini AI (Google LLC) — Your transcripts are sent to Google Gemini AI to generate summaries, quizzes, and flashcards. Google processes this data per their Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
  • Google Cloud Run — Our backend server is hosted on Google Cloud Run. Data is transmitted over HTTPS and not stored after processing.
  • Apple Speech Recognition — Audio is transcribed on-device via Apple's framework.
  • Apple StoreKit — All purchases are processed by Apple. We do not handle payment data.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use data solely to: transcribe your voice, generate AI study content, save notes locally on your device, manage free tier limits, and process subscriptions via Apple.

4. Data Storage & Retention

All notes are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. We do not maintain a user account system or store your notes on our servers. Transcripts sent to Google Gemini AI are subject to Google's data retention policies.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We only share data with the third-party services described above, which is necessary to provide the app's core features.

6. Children's Privacy

PenIt AI is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

7. Your Rights

  • Delete all notes at any time within the app
  • Revoke microphone/speech permissions in iPhone Settings
  • Cancel your subscription via Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions

Every new user gets 3 free recordings with full AI analysis — no credit card required. After that, you can upgrade to a monthly ($4.99/mo) or yearly ($49.99/yr) plan for unlimited recordings.
Absolutely. You can cancel at any time with no penalties. Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone and cancel from there. You'll keep access until the end of your current billing period.
PenIt AI uses Apple's industry-leading Speech Recognition which delivers very high accuracy in quiet environments. For best results, record in a quiet room and speak clearly. Accuracy may vary in noisy lecture halls or with strong accents.
Partially. The live transcription uses Apple's Speech Recognition which may require an internet connection for best accuracy. However, the AI analysis (summaries, quizzes, flashcards) requires an active internet connection to reach our backend. Your saved notes are always accessible offline.
Currently PenIt AI supports English only. We are actively working on adding support for French, Spanish, and Mandarin in a future update. Stay tuned!
Yes! Premium subscribers can export any note as a PDF and share it via AirDrop, email, or any app on your iPhone. The PDF includes your AI summary and transcript, perfectly formatted.
